HOW Magazine Merit Award for Illustrator Kim Rosen
A campaign Kim Rosen recently illustrated for the Starbucks-sponsored Hot Java Cool Jazz posters won a merit award for non-profit work in HOW Magazine.

Chronicle Art Auction at ALA brings out original Calef Brown piece

Some of the lucky attendees at The January 20th Chronicle Books' cocktail party, January at ALA Midwinter, got more than a preview of some of the publisher’s forthcoming books—some walked away with artwork from artists, including Sylvia Long, Calef Brown, Sophie Blackall, and Christopher Silas Neal. Chronicle Books held a raffle at the cocktail party, with winners receiving a piece of original art on display at the event.

Chris Buzelli's interpretation of the Sardonic Smile
Chris Buzelli recently completed a cover for The Journal of the Norwegian Medical Association. The cover project was about "the sardonic smile" as a medical term.
From Chris's blog:
"I knew about the cynical/vengeful expression of a sardonic smile but I had no idea about it as a medical term. In medicine, it is defined as a smile-like facial expression induced by involuntary muscle spasms most often caused by toxins released by tetanus bacteria. However in folklore, the sardonic smile has a much more interesting past. It might have to do with the ingestion of the sardonion plant from Sardinia which cause muscle spasms, laughter and death. "

Bob Dob book covers for the Heck series
Bob Dob has been illustrating the covers for Heck: Where the Bad Kids Go since the series first began in 2007. Here are the first 4 books, and the 5th one will be released this May. Bob is currently working on the cover of the 6th book, and there will ultimately be 9 in the series.

Calef Brown: Gertrude Stein...en français!
Artist and Poet Calef Brown illustrated a children's book about Gertrude Stein titled, "Gertrude is Gertrude is Gertrude is Gertrude", written by Jonah Winter. The book focuses on the relationship between Gertrude and her partner Alice B. Toklas, their colorful life in Paris, and the people who surrounded them. The book was originally published in 2009, and it has just been published in a French edition.
