Calef Brown illustrates Samurai Jack
Calef Brown created this illustration of his interpretation of Samurai Jack for the Cartoon Network 20th Anniversary Book and Exhibition taking place during Comic-Con this week. The exhibit, curated by Mark Murphy, features an incredible line-up of artists (including our own Joel Nakamura, as well!) each of whom was asked to illustrate their interpretation of a Cartoon Network show. Such a great concept! Here is Calef's take on Samurai Jack and Aku:

Calef Brown poster illustration for Teaching Tolerance
Calef Brown created this illustration for The Southern Poverty Law Center’s Teaching Tolerance program, which works to foster school environments "where equality and justice are not just taught, but lived".
Calef was asked to base his illustration on the following quote:
"Today we have gathered and see that the cycles of life continue. We have been given the duty to live in balance and harmony with each other and all living things. So now, we bring our minds together as one as we give greetings and thanks to each other as People. Now our minds are one."
–Adapted from the Mohawk by John Stokes and David Kanawahienton Benedict
And here's what he came up with!

Calef Brown - the graphic side of illustration
We've recently been sharing some of Calef Brown's work from past projects to highlight other takes on his style that you might be less familiar with. For Calef's "graphic" style he works on a flatter, less painterly surface and with a more limited color palette. Here are a few samples which were originally monochromatic paintings that Calef created in all black, white, and gray. He recently reworked these pieces by adding color to them in Photoshop, and it gives them a whole new look:

Calef Brown Illustrations
Calef Brown is well known for his colorful and funky artwork, and also for the children's books he writes and illustrates; however, there is a much wider range to the style and use of his art than you might realize. We thought we would share some of the interesting projects he's done that show other sides of Calef.
This is one he worked on a few years ago for the NCAA Hall of Champions. The campaign was called "Stay in Bounds", and the purpose of it was to promote sportsmanship in kid's athletics. Here are some of the final posters, as well as some of the characters Calef developed for the project:
The client asked Calef to create characters that were stylized and fun rather than realistic and specific. In Calef's own words, "I think the writing is very well done – sincere, but also funny. The posters created for the campaign were adapted for print advertisements as well. The idea of a little mascot that’s a piece of bubblegum, who himself is chewing gum and blowing a bubble, was another character that got a great reaction from kids. A nice bit of absurdity in a campaign that deals with serious issues."

3 new illustrations by Calef Brown for CFO Magazine
Artist and Poet Calef Brown recently created 3 illustrations for the February issue of CFO Magazine. The stories were about rather dry subjects, such as accounting oversight, companies hiring more financial planning and analysis people, and corporations using the computer dashboard interface to monitor their businesses. In Calef's own words, "My challenge was to create engaging illustrations to show the concepts simply and engage the reader. To add variety I gave each of the three pieces a distinct, but related, color palette."
We love the outcome, and think these illos are anything but dry!

Calef Brown – Annoying Buzzwords in the workplace
Calef Brown did this illustration for a feature in the December 2011 issue of PlanSponsor Magazine. The article was about annoying buzzwords in the workplace, and we think Calef's illustration does a great job of conveying this. It must be the way he thinks outside of the box... :)
