Lucie Rice's Hot-man-ta for Atlanta Magazine

Lucie Rice did this illustration for an article in the April 2012 issue of Atlanta Magazine.  The story was about the fact that Atlanta was voted the number one city for "hot guys", but no one can seem to find them anywhere!

Atlanta is a hotbed of handsome—at least, we seem to think so. The deal-doling website LivingSocial commissioned a survey by third-party Mandala Research asking residents in the top twenty U.S. cities to rate their city’s vanity. Lo and behold, ours ranked number one for handsome men. Which led us to one question: Where are all these hotties hiding?

"When Michael was nine yrs. old he would visit his schizophrenic uncle Ian in the mental hospital every week. Ian taught his nephew about the Bhagavad-Gita which is the story of the warrior Arjuna and his charioteer Krishna. Ian taught Michael about the Buddha and how to think and react on a variety levels. On every visit, Michael and Ian discussed, debated and philosophized all while listening to The Beatles' White Album in the background."

Calef Brown - the graphic side of illustration

We've recently been sharing some of Calef Brown's work from past projects to highlight other takes on his style that you might be less familiar with.  For Calef's "graphic" style he works on a flatter, less painterly surface and with a more limited color palette.  Here are a few samples which were originally monochromatic paintings that Calef created in all black, white, and gray.  He recently reworked these pieces by adding color to them in Photoshop, and it gives them a whole new look:

Kim Rosen illustrates for OnEarth magazine

Here is a great illustration by Kim Rosen for the current issue of OnEarth magazine. The article is about the "gear guilt" that some people feel when buying new gear. New and improved gear is ultra light, but the guilt of getting rid of all the old, heavy gear causes the writer some turmoil when thinking about how all that old stuff can wreak havoc on the environment:

3 new illustrations by Calef Brown for CFO Magazine

Artist and Poet Calef Brown recently created 3 illustrations for the February issue of CFO Magazine. The stories were about rather dry subjects, such as accounting oversight, companies hiring more financial planning and analysis people, and corporations using the computer dashboard interface to monitor their businesses.  In Calef's own words, "My challenge was to create engaging illustrations to show the concepts simply and engage the reader. To add variety I gave each of the three pieces a distinct, but related, color palette."

We love the outcome, and think these illos are anything but dry!

Questioning a Doctor's Loyalties - illustration by Kim Rosen

A woman with MS finds out that her neurologist is being paid large amounts of money from pharmaceutical companies to administer certain prescriptions. The patient quickly loses trust in her doctor and makes sure that her future doctor will have no industry relationships or conflicts of interest. This illustration appeared in The Washington Post the weekend of December 17th, 2011.
